COVID, Cold or Flu

Updated: Jun 8, 2022

How can I tell the difference?

With so many similarities between the COVID-19, cold and flu viruses, it can be hard to know what exactly is making you feel so terrible.

With winter just around the corner, now is a good time to get your head around the similarities and differences between these all-too-common viruses.

While COVID, and the Omicron variant in particular, is still so prevalent in our communities, the best advice from the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (RACGP) is to treat any new sore throat, runny nose, or unusual tiredness as COVID until you have been tested. This makes perfect sense given research from the UK shows that with Omicron, around 50% of “new colds” are in fact COVID. Further, whether it is COVID or not, if you are feeling unwell with cold-like symptoms, it is best to stay home and avoid contact with others. And if you do have to go out, be sure to wear a mask (https://www1.racgp.org.au/newsgp/clinical/what-are-the-symptoms-of-omicron).
